2018 BMW X2: First Impressions — Cars.com

another year another luxury SUV this time it’s the x2 a vehicle based on BMWsx1 that does for the brand what the x4 and the x6 do respectively for the x3and the x5 confused yet we don’t blame you if car based crossover SUVs arealready sort of blurred the lines between more upright utility vehiclesand just straight-up hatchbacks the x2 really kind of lands on the hatchbacksaside it looks like a butchered up hatchback with some lower cladding hereon this car at the Auto Show actually three inches lower than the x1 whichcertainly has a more upright profile now you get around to the rear and the x2does have a more upright tail than the X 4 and the X 6 so it does seem moredistinctive as far as BMWs kind of in-between SUVs look speaking ofdistinctive things BMWs logo here an additional one sits on the C pillar thatrecalls the 1970s BMW CS coupe or the e9 for all you enthusiasts now despite themore upright rear window visibility still kind of stinks in the x2 not a lotof glass straight back and giant sea pillars really limit yourover-the-shoulder sight lines beyond that though pretty much an x1 interiorhere which gives you a lot to like both in terms of quality and practicalitylots of space to kind of stash things pretty good materials around you whereit counts as sort of more affordable luxury SUVs go and decent backseat spacetoo now BMW promises quote undiluted driving fun in the x2 but it shares itsfront-wheel drive based platform with the x1 whose nose-heavy balance reallydoes limit a lot of that handling fun so we’ll have to see how all of that shakesout that said from this car here at the Auto Show it does appear that the x2preserves a lot of the ex ones best characteristics being interior qualityand practicality honestly so a lot more to come closer to the X 2’s on sale latein spring of 2018 stay tuned for moreyou

Audi TT RS Coupe and Roadster arrive Down Under | motoring.com.au

Audi has a fantastic history of five-cylinder cars and this is the latest, the all-new,brand-new TT RS With a soundtrack that harks back to the marque’s fabulous group B rally cars, the TT RS isthe new flagship for the TT range – and Audi’s most potent sportscar this side ofthe R8 Audi has launched the latest TT RS in bothCoupe and Roadster versions Down Under…The soft top is a first for Australia. And aside from a few extra kilos and the obvious convertible hardware, it’s mechanicallyidentical – and from what we can see, just as capablethe new TT RS packs some serious punchThe new all-alloy 2. 5-litre five is rated at nearly 300kWNew too in this generation is the sole choice of gearbox – Audi’s excellent seven-speedS tronic dual clutch The quick shifting gearbox combines with thefive’s muscular output and a revised more rear-biassed all-wheel drive system, to produceserious accelerationAudi claims 0-100km/h in 3. 7sec But straightline performance is not the TTRS’s only trickAs we found out from a quick road drive and laps of Phillip island’s wonderful GP Circuit, the TT RS is willing, playful and far more than a one-trick ponyOn the track, there’s decent feel at the wheel, the brakes are strong and fade freeand in its most aggressive chassis mode the safety nannies aren’t too intrusive. That gearbox is a cracker On the road the ride is firm, even in thestandard Magnetic Ride adaptive dampers’ comfort set-up. But nobody’s going to be buying a TT RS for limo duties. In this generation, it’s clear the TT RS has grown up – although prices have dropped,Audi says it’s added over $10,000 of extra equipment to the pairing. to buy more performance in a Roadster you need to spend over $300,000 Audi reckons –and insiders hint the RS coupe has been nobbled to make sure it’s not faster than its big-buckmid-engined stablemate But ultimately it’s not the performance, equipment or even looks of the new TT RS that are its most endearing traitIt’s how it sounds Triples, fives and v10s have unique soundtracksand in the new TT that signature is almost worth the price of admission alone. Almost…

2017 McLaren 570GT Review

Believe it or not, this isn’t the fastest version of McLaren’s 570 supercar…It isn’t the most agile Nor is it the loudest…But if it’s luggage space you’re after, well this model takes the cake. In their own words, this McLaren’s very first everyday supercar…It’s called the 570GT. . It’s slower, heavier and tens of thousands of dollars more expensive than the sporty570S on which it is based. Make sense?Give it time, it just might. . As its name suggests, this is McLaren’s first real attempt at a Grand Tourer…The 570GT is designed to take on Porsche’s 911 Turbo and other ‘everyday’ machineslike the Audi R8 V10 Plus…It is priced at $406,800 (plus on-road costs), making it considerably more expensive thanthose immediate rivals and nearly $30,000 more than the sportier 570S. Upon first inspection it’s hard to believe this is a grand tourer. These awkward dihedral doors remain, as does the carbon fibre monococque chassis…And while McLaren has made some revisions inside, including its very first vanity mirror, there is no denying the GT’s supercar DNA. Instead, it is further back that the marketing rhetoric starts to materialise. Boasting a re-worked – and, dare we say more attractive rear – the 570GT featuresa rear hatch that opens to one side, allowing you to load its new leather-lined 220 litreboot from the kerb. Sitting above the engine, the so-called touring deck is insulated, so it won’t cook thecontents of your bags. It is matched by a 130-litre frunk at the opposite end. More than that though, McLaren has made some serious under the skin revisions that reallyhelp explain the GT positioning. For one the suspension has been softened – 15 per cent at the front and 10 per cent of therear. The standard exhaust is a little quieiter, the S’ carbon ceramic brakes have been replacedby normal road units and the steering brings a 2 per cent change in ratio. With all the handling and engine settings set to docile, the GT is an impressively quietand well-mannered machine. It happily schleps around, the quick-witted seven-speed dual clutch offering well-timedand seamless shifts…The steering is well-weighted, and the cabin is quiet with excellent bump absorption traits. One thing that hasn’t changed is the engine – it’s the same 3. 8-litre twin-turbo V8– boasting 419kW and 600Nm…Little bit of lag in the lower reaches, but once the turbos spool up, it is all forwardprogress. 0-100km in 3. 4 seconds. For the record, that’s 0. 3 seconds shy of the 570’s acceleration time…And while the GT is hardly sluggish, it’s not the only area where it cannot match it’ssportier sibling. In isolation, you wouldn’t want anymore power. . But I think for me it is missing something, there’s not the same aural excitement, andfor me it does take away from the experience. Another clear omission is the S’ carbon ceramic brakes. The GT’s brakes just cannot emulate the same stopping power, and are poorly modulatedthrough the pedal When the road gets rough, yes you know you’rein a supercar. There’s still a raw edge to the steering, particularly the feedback from the road. Even so, the 570GT makes a strong case within the McLaren fold, and as supercars go, isone of the more liveable offerings from the British manufacturer. So the comparison here probably isn’t between which McLaren you’d pick but whether you’dchoose this over a 911 Turbo. It’s from the 911 Turbo, which is better dynamically and is still, somehow, easierto live with. But in saying that the McLaren is distinctive and it is different, and for many buyers, that makes more than enough sense all on its own.

2017 AutoGuide.com Car of the Year Winner – Part 7 of 7

It has been an exciting year for new cars, which makes our job of pickinga car of the year a little bit more difficult. You know, last year it was pretty much a unanimous decision with the Honda Civic. But, this year our editors were debating for a really long time over which one ofthese cars would get our top honors. And why shouldn’t it take copious amounts of deliberation? They’re all such incredibly strong products. Parked behind us are six of the most important new modelscoming out for 2017. But only one of them can be our Car of the Year winner. So starting at the bottom and working up, we begin with the Chevy Cruze. Some of us were fighting over this car because it had Wi-Fiand standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and we wanted to stream our Spice Girls throwbackswithout eating up our data plans. Was that just me?Maybe, but besides having 4G LTE connectivitythe Cruze also has a great infotainment system, and great value in a base model, but as soon as you add in any optionsthe price becomes quite inflated and it diminishes the car’s value. A fact that isn’t helped by this cheap interior. Following in the Cruze’s tire tracksis Kia’s all-new Optima, which won us over by looking and feelingfar more upscale than many of its competitors. It’s an excellent all-around car with a lovely interior and comfortable ride,it doesn’t drive particularly well, and its 2. 0L turbocharged engine is rather noisy. The Hyundai Elantra is trying to win people over byoffering a huge amount of luxury car features in a compact car. As a package, it’s fantastic, and it offers a lot of value. But perhaps it doesn’t push the boundaries enough to set a new standard, which is something we’re always looking for. Next up, the BMW M2 a car that everybody lovedbecause it’s absolutely fantastic to drive. Besides sounding great and looking mature, yet still aggressive, the M2 struck a great balance between performance and everyday drivability. However, we do wish the steering was a bit more communicativeand that the infotainment system were better, but our editors were absolutely smitten with this balanced, focused coupe, and ended up fighting over the keys quite a lot. The Volkswagen Golf Alltrack was also a top contender for the award this year, and we found it its driving dynamics a lot better than both the Cruze and the Optima. After we took it on a trail, we came away even more impressedby its abilities off-road. The price is also very decent and besidesa smooth and powerful engine, and classy interior, the Alltrack just feels like a regular Golf which is pretty remarkable. And that brings us to the Focus RS. During testing we fell in love with this car because it’s an old dogthat has learned some amazing new tricks. You know, Ford has taken a pretty average compact vehicle at this point, and transformed it into an absolutely remarkable machine. One that drivers would be proud to own. And not only is it fun and engaging to drivebut it’s also easy to drive, whether you’re blasting down canyon roadsor just commuting to work, it just feels so natural. And one of the other things that really impressed us was its base priceof around $36,000, which makes it a bargain by performance standards. Add that in with the fact that it’s just so well-rounded,And it really became an easy pick for AutoGuide. com’s Car of the Year. Songs are much more fun when you meow them. ♪Meow, meow, meow, meow. . . ♪Meow, meow, meow, meow. . .
